A typical day

Getting well often takes lots of time and effort, so we plan each day you're here to accomplish the most possible. All patients are expected to participate in three hours of therapy each day. Rest periods are provided between therapies as needed.

At the end of each day, you can expect to be tired. But we won't let you become bored.

The first therapy of the day is usually Activities of Daily Living, called "ADL". It is conducted in your room by an Occupational Therapist (OT) who shows you how to take care of yourself. This session usually includes bathing, grooming and dressing.

Our nursing staff is familiar with these ADL activities, and your family will have the opportunity to learn them and help you as well.

Physical therapy (PT) is next in the PT gymnasium, following by additional OT. Lunch is served at 11:45 a.m. in the dining room, with OT and PT scheduled again in the afternoon.

If you need speech therapy, your speech/language pathologist will see you to address speech, language, swallowing, memory, or cognitive issues. Rounds made by your physician and nurse supervisor are scheduled around therapies. Your therapy schedule is posted on the board near the nurses' station.

Dinner is served between 5 and 6 p.m. in the dining room.

Throughout your stay at Salina Regional Health Center, nursing is critical to your rehabilitation process. Your nursing care is coordinated with other therapies and activities, all aimed at helping you become more independent.

Balance and Fall Prevention

At Salina Regional Health Center's Outpatient Physical Therapy Clinic we offer specialty care for individuals who have experienced loss of balance or recent falls. Our therapists, in consultation with your physician, will assess your posture, balance, strength, walking pattern, joint flexibility, vision, cognition, and conduct an interview with you regarding your home environment. After we determine what is impairing your balance, our therapists will design an individualized program of therapeutic exercises, including specific strengthening and balance exercise, gait retraining and safety education.

If needed, our therapists can help you with your assistive device for walking such as canes, crutches or walkers and also make appropriate home adaptation recommendations like bathroom safety equipment.

Falls are one of the leading causes of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. Falls threaten seniors' safety and independence and generate enormous economic and personal costs.

However, falling is not an inevitable result of aging. Through fall risk assessments, practical lifestyle adjustments, evidence-based falls prevention programs, and clinical-community partnerships, the number of falls among seniors can be substantially reduced.
